What is Belly Dancing?
The original origin of belly dance is unknown but, oral tradition links it back to ancient times when it was used to support childbirth. Belly dance or Oriental dance has been a part of culture throughout the Middle East and North Africa. For centuries Oriental dance was performed at joyous occasions such as weddings, the birth of a child, festivals or any event that brought people together to party. In Muslim culture a woman would only dance for other women because men and women would generally have separate parties.
In today‘s culture, men and women gather together to celebrate special occasions and throw parties in large settings however, some conservative Muslim women still feel uncomfortable dancing in settings where men are present.
Professional dancers throughout the world today often perform in nightclubs, weddings and for other special occasions. They also use many props such as veils, swords, Candelabras (Shemadan), cane (i.e. folkloric dance) and zills (finger cymbals). There are also many types of oriental dance forms such as Egyptian style, Turkish, Moroccan, Tunisian, Persian, etc.
Adalia has studied a variety of oriental dance forms such as Egyptian and Turkish oriental and Romany. (see bio). Each form is structured differently in style, music and rhythm.
